About Exide
The Exide Story
Since its inception in 1880, Exide remains the first and foremost battery brand in India. Exide's journey dates back to as far as the 1880s when automobile battery was at its infancy and was evolving to maturity step by step
While the lead acid battery had been discovered in 1860, storage batteries began to be produced by Mather & Platt in the 1880s. The batteries - or accumulators as they were then called - followed a design in which Lead Chloride was the active material. Accordingly, the new company was christened Chloride Electrical Storage Syndicate.
One of the critical ingredients in making the plates of such a battery was oxide. Having perfected the technology, Chloride coined a brand name "Exide", a derivative acronym from the term 'Excellent Oxide'.
After the USA emerged as a major automobile market, Chloride entered into a joint venture with the Electrical Storage Battery Company of Philadelphia and began promoting the 'brand Exide'. As a result, both Chloride and brand Exide reached far-flung parts of the globe (including British colonies) as part of the British Empire's industrialisation process.
About Exide
Exide in India
In India, as in many other erstwhile colonies of Great Britain, Exide batteries were imported for many years before the Chloride Electrical Storage Company (CESCO) was finally set up in 1916. It started only as an assembling and manufacturing facility and the first manufacturing unit was set up in Shamnagar in 1947. This marks the momentous entry of Associated Battery Makers Eastern Limited (ABMEL) in the Indian industrial scenario.
For road vehicles, ABMEL's principle brands were Exide and Dagenite (used by Rolls Royce) but the Company was changing its course on other tracks too. Exide "Iron Clad" batteries powered the Railways and in 1963, following the Chinese aggression, the company doubled its production of special defence batteries. The same year saw the manufacture of large stationery batteries for railway track electrification.
The rapid rate of expansion is seen with the establishment of a second factory in 1969 at Chinchwad, Maharashtra to cater to the growing demand for automobile batteries and was strategically established near automobile Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).

Exide Milestones
1972:ABMEL became Chloride India Limited.
1976:The R&D Centre was established in India. By this time, the Chloride Group, UK was the world's largest manufacturer of batteries (operating in 23 countries) and had the biggest repository of fundamental battery technology. The R&D Center of Chloride India was the only one of its kind outside the UK in the Chloride Group, and its establishment was a singular tribute to the capabilities of the Indian scientists and engineers.
1981:A third plant was set up in Haldia, West Bengal to cater to the huge USSR market. After the disintegration of the Soviet Union, this plant became the hub of production for special types of batteries like submarine batteries, automotive and traction batteries.
1990s:Several noteworthy events took place during the '90s. Exide Industries entered into a technical collaboration with Shin-Kobe Electric for both advanced automotive and VRLA batteries for industrial and UPS applications.
1995:Chloride Industries was renamed Exide Industries Limited in deference to its powerful brand name "Exide".
1997:A state-of-the-art plant at Hosur, Tamil Nadu went on stream for the production of VRLA batteries and high-end automotive batteries for companies like Toyota.
1998:Exide Industries entered the 2-wheeler market, with the emergence of this new industry. The same year, the Company acquired the assets of Standard Batteries Limited. This acquisition brought with it a technical collaboration with Furukawa Batteries, Japan, adding four more production units to its arsenal.
2001:Exide developed special power packs for electric vehicles and water vessels. It launched the first zero emission, battery driven three-wheeler, the Electravan and a battery powered boat - the 'sonar tar'.
